Near the town square The Inn on the River is an historic building, part of a resort built in 1919 then known as Dr. Snyder's Drugless Health Sanitarium. Sitting along the banks of the Paluxy River, today the inn aims to be a quiet, no-fuss zone. Casually elegant with antiques and elegant furnishings, the inn has 19 rooms and three suites (with private baths, feather beds and down comforters) that can be yours for $129 to $209 a night. Guests enjoy breakfast in the dining room with a view of the lawns following the river bank. A four-course dinner ($39) is available Friday and Saturday nights. Accommodations include an outdoor pool and two conference centers. Inn On The River is a non-smoking facility and unable to accommodate children under 16 years of age and pets. Smoking is permitted outdoors.

A bed and breakfast for those seeking something more adventurous, or something unique, accommodations are available at the elegant, antique-filled Lodge at Fossil Rim. The Lodge provides five bedrooms to choose from. Two bedrooms (at $125 per night) with a shared bathroom; two on the second level are $150 and $175 per night with private bath and Jacuzzi; the master bedroom on the third floor (at $225 a night) features a fireplace and Jacuzzi tub.

For something more rustic, the deluxe hard walled tents at the Foothills Safari Camps are $150 a night (for two) and include breakfast. To get there, turn left onto County Road 2010 off Highway 67 about a half mile beyond the Wildlife Center sign. For reservations, call Nature Escapes at (254) 897-4933. In the off-season, three to four week's notice is recommended. In the spring and summer months, reservations six to eight weeks in advance are suggested.
